Ask how many users Character AI has and you’ll find answers ranging from 4 million to 45 million to 185 million, all technically sourced, all measuring different things. Since this is the most-used platform in the market I test daily, I owe it the full treatment: every number, its ruler, and its date. Character AI by the numbers, untangled.
The short answer: Character AI has about 20 million monthly active users, per the most defensible third-party estimates. MAU peaked around 28 million in mid-2024 before declining, one tracker reports 45 million broader “active users,” and the mobile apps alone account for roughly 4–6 million MAU. Separately, the website draws about 185 million visits a month and the apps have passed 69 million downloads, different metrics that constantly get quoted as “users.” The 20 million is the only figure the company itself has confirmed; the rest is third-party measurement.
Every stat below names its source, its metric, and its date, because on this topic the metric IS the story. Sources at the bottom.

How many users does Character AI have?
Five real numbers, five different rulers. Here’s the ladder, strictest to loosest:
1. The most defensible answer: about 20 million monthly active users.
The one figure with the company’s own name on it: at the time of the Google deal in August 2024, Character AI stated it had more than 20 million monthly active users, and it has repeated the 20-million figure since. Independent Similarweb estimates land in the same range. Beyond that headline number, the company publishes no regular user reports, so the rest of this page is third-party measurement.
2. Monthly active users peaked around 28 million in mid-2024, and have declined since.
The honest trajectory most stats pages omit: Character AI’s user count is past its peak. The commonly cited reason is competition, by 2025, free general chatbots had become good enough at roleplay and conversation to absorb the casual layer, leaving the platform its devoted core. What that core does with its time is the real story (section 5).
3. The loosest ruler: 45 million “active users” as of September 2025.
A broader activity definition than strict MAU, and the biggest defensible user figure in circulation. The 25-million-user figure you’ll also see from the same source reflects a different snapshot. When estimates span 20–45 million, the honest summary is: tens of millions, measured loosely.
4. The strictest ruler: the mobile apps alone run roughly 4–6 million MAU.
Worth knowing because app-store rankings quote it: by app-only MAU, Character AI looks mid-sized. But this platform is unusual for its era, a large share of its usage stays on the website, so app-only counts undercount it badly.
5. The glossary that untangles every Character AI headline: MAU ≠ registered accounts ≠ visits ≠ downloads.
MAU counts unique people active in a month (~20M). Registered accounts count everyone who ever signed up (unpublished). Visits count sessions, one person, sixty visits (~185M/month). Downloads count installs, ever (69M+). Most viral claims about this platform come from quoting one of these as if it were another.
The growth story, as a timeline
Five years, one arc: research darling, hypergrowth, peak, and a harder second act.
6. 2021–2022: founded by the people who built Google’s LaMDA; public beta launches September 2022.
Noam Shazeer, a co-author of the Transformer paper itself, and Daniel De Freitas left Google to build the chatbot Google wouldn’t ship. Within months of the September 2022 beta, pre-ChatGPT-app, note, users were already logging hours-long sessions.
7. March 2023: a $150 million round led by a16z values the company at $1 billion.
Unicorn status about six months after public launch, on roughly $193 million in total disclosed funding. The mobile apps followed in May 2023 and were downloaded over 1.7 million times in their first week.
8. August 2024: Google pays $2.7 billion for a non-exclusive license and hires back the founders.
The deal almost every stats page misdescribes: Google did NOT acquire Character AI. It paid $2.7 billion for a non-exclusive license to the technology and acqui-hired Shazeer, De Freitas, and about 30 researchers. The company continues independently under new leadership, and that same summer marked its 28-million-MAU peak.
9. November 2025: open-ended chat removed for under-18s, the biggest product change in its history.
Following lawsuits from families alleging serious harm to minors, and regulatory pressure behind them, Character AI announced in October 2025 that users under 18 would lose open-ended companion chat entirely, effective late November, with age verification via third-party provider Persona and a new AI Safety Lab announced alongside. For a platform whose audience skews as young as section 4 shows, this was seismic, and given the mental-health traffic documented on my AI mental health statistics page, the pressure was not surprising.
10. 2026: the plateau era, fewer users than peak, steadier traffic, and rising revenue.
The current shape: MAU off its high, monthly visits stable around 180–185 million, downloads still compounding, and revenue up 66% year over year. Growth companies get headlines; Character AI quietly became a retention company.
Traffic and downloads
Now the numbers that get confused with users, which deserve their own section precisely so they don’t.
11. The website draws about 185 million visits a month, roughly 6.5 million a day.
April 2026 measured 180.7 million visits, with the trailing six-month average just above 185 million. Divide visits by the ~20M MAU and you get the platform’s signature: the average active user shows up about nine times a month.
12. At its peak, Character AI was the second-most-visited AI tool on the internet, behind only ChatGPT.
August 2024 recorded 200.8 million visits in a single month. Newer rivals have since crowded the top five, but for a stretch of the AI boom, the #2 AI destination on Earth was a roleplay chatbot, a fact the productivity-focused AI discourse never quite digested.
13. The apps have passed 69 million total downloads, with Google Play averaging ~4.9 million a month at its best.
Peak month: 7.9 million Android downloads in August 2024; some trackers now put the cumulative total above 75 million. Ratings hold around 4.7 on the App Store, strong for a platform this controversial.
14. The loyalty tell: 64.6% of all traffic arrives direct, and under 1% is paid.
Two-thirds of visitors type the URL or open the app on autopilot, with 26% from organic search and just 0.75% from ads. That’s not a marketing funnel; that’s a habit. It also explains why user decline hasn’t dented visits: the people who left were the ones who arrived casually.
Who uses Character AI
The most age-concentrated user base of any major AI platform, and one genuinely surprising split.
15. 51.84% of users are aged 18–24, and over half the audience is Gen Z or Gen Alpha.
No major AI platform concentrates this young. It’s the same cohort driving the AI companion category overall. The company itself reported that roughly 10% of users self-identified as minors before the 2025 policy change, which is why the under-18 restrictions cut so deep into the product’s identity.
16. The surprise: the gender split is nearly even, 51.4% male / 48.6% female.
Whatever you assumed about who spends hours talking to AI characters, the data says: everyone. The near-parity reflects the platform’s range, romance bots share the library with anime characters, study helpers, and the Psychologist bot, and it separates Character AI sharply from the male-skewed companion apps I review.
17. Geography: the US leads with 16–25% of traffic depending on the period, with India and Brazil next.
Different measurement windows put the US share anywhere from 16.4% to around 25%, so I’m giving the range rather than false precision. Either way, three-quarters of Character AI’s usage is international, a genuinely global platform with an American center of gravity, like the companion market overall.
Engagement and the character economy
Here’s where Character AI stops being a mid-sized platform and becomes an outlier.
18. Sessions average 25–45 minutes, roughly seven times ChatGPT’s ~6 minutes.
ChatGPT’s usage pattern is a utility: about four short check-ins a day. Character AI’s is a destination: users settle in. By raw headcount, ChatGPT is 25–50× bigger; by minutes per user, the comparison flips entirely.
19. Active users average 75–90+ minutes a day, over 2 billion chat minutes a month platform-wide.
The number that made Character AI famous, daily time on par with or beyond TikTok, which I put in category context in my AI companion statistics. Fewer users than the giants, but each one worth many times the attention.
20. Users have created over 18 million characters, and attention concentrates hard on the top ones.
The character library is the product: users build the bots, from anime heroes to historical figures to therapists. Tracker analyses report the most popular characters absorb a dominant share of all chats, the same top-heavy pattern as every creator platform I’ve covered, though exact concentration figures aren’t independently verified.
21. The use cases: entertainment and roleplay lead, with companionship and advice close behind, including a Psychologist bot with tens of millions of messages.
Most users come to play; a meaningful share stays to talk. That single user-created Psychologist character became one of the platform’s most-messaged bots, a fact that says more about unmet demand than about AI, and one I unpacked in my AI mental health statistics.
The business: revenue, Google, and valuation
The strangest financial profile in consumer AI: shrinking users, growing money.
22. Revenue: $15.2M (2023) → $32.2M (2024) → ~$50M (2025), up 66% in the latest year.
All while MAU fell from its 28-million peak. The platform grew down and monetized up: the casual users who left weren’t paying, and the devoted core that stayed increasingly does, through c.ai+ at $9.99/month and an ad layer.
23. Valuation: estimates run $5–10 billion post-Google-deal, all unofficial.
After the $2.7 billion license payment, private-market estimates spread wide, and I’m flagging them as exactly that: estimates for a company that hasn’t raised a priced round since its $1 billion Series A. The honest statement is that nobody outside the cap table knows.
24. The community proxy: the subreddit grew from 10 members (Aug 2022) to 2.5 million (Feb 2025).
One of the largest AI communities anywhere, and among the most active per capita. Whatever the MAU trackers say, a platform’s afterlife lives in its community, and this one behaves like a fandom, not a user base, which may be Character AI’s most durable asset.
Character AI is the biggest platform in the market I test, and the one that collects the most data.
It’s in my testing roster alongside the dedicated companion apps, and it’s the platform Surfshark found collects the most unique data types of any major companion app, which is exactly the kind of thing my reviews weigh. The category numbers are in my AI girlfriend statistics, and the hands-on comparison is on my homepage.
See the hands-on comparison →Conclusion
So, how many users does Character AI have? About 20 million monthly active users by the best estimates, down from a 28-million peak, inside a wider circle of 45 million loosely active and 69 million downloads, generating 185 million visits a month, only the 20 million ever confirmed by the company, all of it pointing the same direction.
My read as a data researcher: the 20 million was never the real number. The real number is the asymmetry: ChatGPT has 25 to 50 times the users and one-seventh the session length. Character AI lost its casual layer, kept a core that shows up nine times a month for half-hour sessions, and grew revenue 66% doing it. Its product isn’t headcount, it’s attention, and by that measure it remains one of the most successful consumer AI products ever shipped.
FAQs
How many users does Character AI have?
About 20 million monthly active users, per Similarweb-derived estimates for 2025–2026. MAU peaked around 28 million in mid-2024, one tracker reports 45 million broader active users, and the company itself publishes no official figures. The website separately draws about 185 million visits per month.
Is that monthly active users or registered users?
Monthly active users, unique people using the platform in a given month. Registered account totals have never been published. Be careful with headlines: the 185 million figure is monthly visits (sessions, not people) and 69 million is cumulative downloads. Quoting any of those as “users” inflates the real number several times over.
Is Character AI growing or declining?
Both, depending on the metric. Monthly active users are below the mid-2024 peak of 28 million, as free general chatbots absorbed casual users. But traffic has held near 185 million monthly visits, downloads keep compounding past 69 million, and revenue grew 66% to roughly $50 million in 2025. Fewer users, more engagement and money per user.
How many people visit the Character AI website?
Roughly 185 million visits per month on recent averages, about 6.5 million per day, with 64.6% arriving direct. At its August 2024 peak the site logged over 200 million monthly visits, briefly making it the second-most-visited AI tool in the world after ChatGPT.
Does Google own Character AI?
No. In August 2024, Google paid $2.7 billion for a non-exclusive license to Character AI’s technology and hired its founders and about 30 researchers. Character AI remains an independent company under new leadership; Google gained the people and the technology rights, not the platform.
